Rossi: "I Think Lorenzo Has His Own Jorge Beside Him Next Year"

Valentino Rossi was far from happy with his qualifying position at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, his worst position since Valencia 2008. His attempt to improve his qualifying position had been hampered by a crash with just a few minutes left in the session, the Fiat Yamaha rider going down at Turn 6, a corner that has caught out a lot of riders so far this weekend.
Speaking to the Italian press after qualifying, Rossi complained about the surface of the track in that corner, saying "if it hadn't have been for that hole in Turn Six ... We asked for that hole to be filled in two years' ago in the Safety Commission." The crash was Rossi's second of the day, something that hadn't happened since his first season back in 1996, Rossi claimed. The cause, Rossi explained, was the rear suspension being set too hard, making it impossible for Rossi to catch the bike once it started to slide.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Close To Extending MotoGP Deal

MotoGP's history at Indianapolis got off to a tempestuous start, quite literally. The inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix in 2008 took place in the shadow of Hurricane Ike, but despite the storm, and the global financial meltdown, the race has had a fairly strong attendance for the past two years, with 91,000 paying customers in '08, dropping to just over 75,000 last year, in the midst of the global recession. 2010, however, is the last year of Indianapolis' three-year contract to stage a MotoGP event, and as yet, no announcements about the future of the race have been made.
That could all change over the next few days. The Indianapolis Star is reporting that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is close to signing an extension with Dorna to continue to stage a MotoGP event in 2011, and maybe beyond. According to the Indy Star, IMS CEO Jeff Belskus believes that there are "a couple of unresolved issues" to overcome, but Belskus is confident that a new deal will be announced before the end of the weekend.

Things To Do At Indy, Part 2: Walk The Pits, Bag Memorabilia At the Riders For Health Auction, Celebrate Downtown

Yesterday we told you about two must-see events taking place during the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, today, we have more events making a trip to Indy worth your while. If you're looking for something to do either before the bikes hit the track or after they're done, then here's a few ideas: You can get a close-up view of the bikes during the pit walk on Friday morning; you can bid on some of the best motorcycling memorabilia available during the Riders for Health auction, also on Friday morning; and you can kick off the race weekend with the downtown event and bike parade at Monument Circle on Thursday. Details of the events below, from Indianapolis Motor Speedway press releases.
But if there's one thing you really shouldn't miss when you're at Indy, it's the Indy Mile, to be run at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. No matter what your taste in racing, there is nothing quite like the sight of 40 big V-twins thundering round mile oval track with no brakes. If you want to see racing at its best - and a paddock full of stunned MotoGP stars awe-struck by the racing - get to the Indy Mile on Saturday night. To get a taste of the Mile, check out Scott Jones' photos from last year.

Engine List From Brno 2010 - Suzuki Struggles, Honda Dominates

The latest engine lists released by IRTA at Brno paint a revealing picture of the state of play with regards to engine reliability. Top of the class is Honda, whose reliability is not so much legendary as utterly intimidating. In fact, it might even be fair to say that Honda have done too good a job: The factory Honda riders have still only used three engines, despite the fact that Brno was the 10th race of the season. Of the 22 engines which have been used by the six Honda riders, just two have been withdrawn, a testament to HRC's engineering. Add this to the fact that the Honda is clearly the fastest bike on the grid, and you can see that Honda's competitors will be troubled.
Contrast Honda's fortunes to those of Suzuki. With just two riders on the grid, the Rizla Suzuki squad already has four retired engines and a total of 11 in play. Alvaro Bautista took his 6th engine at Brno, the engine extension permitted by the Grand Prix Commission coming just at the right time. Of the other riders, only Ben Spies looks to be in engine trouble, the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha rider having taken his 5th engine at Brno, but then Spies' last two new engines coincide with rumors of upgraded parts, rumors bolstered by Spies' run close to the podium in the Czech Grand Prix.read more

Aoyama To Return To Racing At Indianapolis

Hiroshi Aoyama's rookie season in MotoGP has not been easy. The last ever 250cc World Champion entered MotoGP in a brand new team on a satellite Honda and had spent his time slowly getting up to speed, all the while struggling with a wrist problem. Then, just as the Interwetten Honda rider seemed to be getting to grips with the new class, fate dealt him a cruel blow in the form of a Sunday morning cold-tire highside at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. Aoyama fractured his T12 vertebra, and was out for at least three months.
Rejecting surgery, Aoyama decided to let the fracture heal naturally. Speaking to MotoMatters.com at Brno on Saturday, Aoyama explained that the alternative would have been to have the vertebra above and below fused together, and though that would have allowed the Interwetten Honda rider to return to action more quickly, it would also have permanently restricted his range of motion, complicating the process of learning to ride. Aoyama's decision not to have surgery was vindicated two days later, when the Japanese rider tested the Interwetten Honda RC212V once again, and immediately set times faster than Alex de Angelis, the rider who had been drafted in to replace Aoyama during his absence.

The standard joke in motorsports paddocks around the world is that the way to make a small fortune in motor racing is to start off with a large one. Randy Mamola Interview - Moto2 Needs Homologated Engines, Not Single Engines

Randy Mamola truly is a MotoGP legend. The American may never have won a championship, but the perennial runner up was always a huge favorite with both the fans and the media. To this day, Mamola is still a regular face in the paddock, the American riding the Ducati X2 two-seater for VIPs and guests, although budget cuts and the loss of the live broadcast rights meant that he is no longer the pit lane reporter for British Eurosport.
Mamola holds strong opinions about the sport of MotoGP, which regular expounds both in his column for US magazine Road Racer X and on the Alpinestars website. MotoMatters.com's Scott Jones caught up with Mamola at Laguna Seca, to get his take on the Moto2 class.
MotoMatters: Randy, now that we're half way through the 2010 season, what are your thoughts on Moto 2 and what might be done to improve it next year?

2010 Brno Post-Race Test Times 1pm - Lorenzo Fastest By Half A Second

The rain that had threatened to make the mid-season Brno MotoGP test a washout did not materialize on Monday morning, and the first part of the test took place under clear skies and bright sunshine. When the bikes took a break for lunch, it was Fiat Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo who was clearly fastest, beating Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner by nearly six tenths of a second. Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi were 3rd and 4th fastest respectively, a couple of tenths apart.
The test gave us a number of clues as to the work going on for 2011. Jorge Lorenzo is riding a 2011 prototype Yamaha M1, while Valentino Rossi - now officially confirmed as riding with Ducati next season - is testing 2010 suspension upgrades and trying to solve the grip problems he suffered yesterday. He is already over a second faster than on Sunday, so presumably they've found the problem.
If Valentino Rossi is not riding the 2011 Yamaha, Ben Spies is. Spies had two bikes in his garage - one Tech 3 machine, and one kept permanently under a cover, which when removed revealed an all-black carbon-fiber fairing, hinting at confirmation of his future in Yamaha. Yamaha Racing MD Lin Jarvis said that the team is very close to announcing their rider lineup for 2011, but that they still had a few details to work out.

2010 Brno MotoGP Warm Up Result - Dovizioso Tops Wet Session

Warm up took place on a wet track, punctuated by a very brief downpour. Andrea Dovizioso was the quickest man of the morning, leading his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa by over a second and a half. Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner lapped in exactly the same time as Pedrosa, but few fast laps put him 3rd.
The wet conditions caused a lot of people to be extra cautious. After his crash yesterday, Valentino Rossi had already said that he would be very conservative if it rained. Given his 16th place, the Italian was being doubly careful during warm up. Marco Simoncelli was less cautious, and paid the price. The San Carlo Gresini Honda rider went out on slicks at the end of the session, and crashed.

2010 Brno MotoGP FP2 Result - Pedrosa Edges Lorenzo For Top Spot

At an overcast and misty Brno circuit, Dani Pedrosa interrupted Jorge Lorenzo's domination of the MotoGP class, the Repsol Honda rider just pipping the Fiat Yamaha man by sixteen thousandths of a second in FP2. Pedrosa's teammate Andrea Dovizioso was 3rd, the factory Hondas taking advantage of their horsepower advantage up the hill back to the start and finish straight. Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner made a solid improvement, ending up in 4th spot just ahead of Valentino Rossi, while the Monster Tech 3 Yamahas of Colin Edwards and Ben Spies put in a good showing to finish 6th and 7th, ahead of the second Ducati of Nicky Hayden.

Andrea Dovizioso: "My Target Is To Stay In The Repsol Honda Team"

After Friday's first session of free practice for the MotoGP class in Brno, a small group of journalists attended Andrea Dovizioso's media debrief in the Repsol Honda hospitality. Dovizioso talked about a number of things, but the main topic of conversation was the state of his contract negotiations. Here's what Dovizioso had to say about the state of play.
Q: Do you have any idea about your contract for next year? You're still taking to Honda?
Andrea Dovizioso: Yes. We're still talking and nothing's fixed. Our target is to continue.

2010 Brno 125cc FP2 Result - Smith Leads Fogbound Morning Session

The thunderstorms that moved in to Brno overnight left a thick haze of fog hanging over the Czech circuit, postponing the start of proceedings by 30 minutes. Once the fog lifted sufficiently that the medical airlift helicopter could fly again - a prerequisite for action to start on track - the 125cc riders took to the track for their second session of free practice, minus Red Bull Ajo's Marc Marquez who is still uncertain of taking part due to the shoulder he dislocated yesterday.
In Marquez' absence, the Bancaja Aspar riders dominated the session, Bradley Smith and Nico Terol swapping the lead throughout, with Smith coming out on top. STIPA Molenaar's Randy Krummenacher took 3rd, eight tenths behind Smith, and Tuenti Derbi's Pol Espargaro rounded out the top four, another half a second behind Krummenacher.

Lascorz Fractures Ribs And Shoulder Blade In Silverstone Crash

Sunday's World Supersport race at Silverstone was marred by an ugly crash shortly after the start. Eugene Laverty accidentally clipped the rear wheel of Joan Lascorz' Motocard Kawasaki, and the Spaniard went down. Lascorz was then hit full on by wildcard rider Roberto Tamburini on the Bike Service Yamaha, in turn throwing Tamburini off his bike and sending him tumbling through the grass at the side of the track, and hitting the unprotected wall just a few feet from the edge of the track. Both Tamburini and Lascorz were removed from the track by ambulance for examination at the Clinica Mobile, where early reports suggested that both men had come away virtually unscathed, with Tamburini reported as having a dislocated shoulder.

De Puniet Hoping To Make Return At Brno

Valentino Rossi's record recovery from injury, taking just 41 days to return to racing after breaking his tibia and fibula at Mugello, appears to have brought out the competitive spirit in Randy de Puniet. The Frenchman suffered a similar injury to Rossi's, fracturing his tibia and fibula in a race crash involving Mika Kallio at the Sachsenring, ironically, the very race that Rossi made his return at. Now, De Puniet is targeting a return just 26 days after his accident, two full weeks earlier.
De Puniet was luckier than Rossi, as his fractures were not compound and that the bones did not puncture the skin. But a return to active service so shortly after the injury is almost unheard of, and hard to believe it is medically possible. De Puniet had a large titanium pin inserted into his tibia, to fix the bone, and has since been undergoing treatment using the same hyperbaric chamber therapy that Rossi used to help speed his recovery. In addition to the hyperbaric chamber, De Puniet also used ultrasound to help the bones knit together better. As the LCR Honda rider is already walking without crutches, and is back in the gym working on his fitness program, De Puniet believes he will be fit enough to race at Brno a week on Sunday.

Introducing Marc Marquez: Repsol Presents Their 125cc Representative

Here at MotoMatters.com, we are not in the habit of publishing press releases unless they have something of particular interest to impart. That is very much the case with the interview with Red Bull Ajo rider Marc Marquez that arrived in our mailboxes. Despite being a press release from a sponsor - therefore avoiding controversy and difficult questions - the interview is highly illuminating about Marquez. The current 125cc championship leader is widely tipped for success, underlining his status in the paddock by becoming the first rider to win five 125 races in a row at the Sachsenring, and looking just about unbeatable. At the age of just 17, Marquez looks to have a big future in MotoGP. Here's what he had to say to the Repsol Media service:

After so many weeks of races one after the other, are you looking forward to slowing the pace down a bit?
"It's true that racing every week can be hard but, in my case, where I have been winning and things came easily, I've been very motivated weekend after weekend. The holidays are always good though, even more when you've done your work well beforehand".

Ducati CEO Confirms MotoGP's Worst-Kept Secret: Rossi And Hayden At Ducati For 2011 - UPDATED

It is hard to pin down at exactly what stage a rumor stops being a rumor and becomes news, a fact demonstrated by Valentino Rossi's impending move to the Ducati MotoGP team. The very first rumors emerged around the weekend of Mugello, the story broken by veteran Italian journalist Paolo Scalera of the Corriere dello Sport. By the time the MotoGP paddock arrived at Assen, the paddock was positively buzzing with rumors, and at Barcelona, speculation switched from whether Rossi would switch to Ducati to when he would announce it. At the German Grand Prix in the Sachsenring, Rossi cleared up that detail as well: any announcement on his future, he told the pre-event press conference, would have to wait until Brno.

MotoGP 2011 Silly Season - Part 1, The Factory Teams

With the MotoGP season at its halfway point, and the silly season starting to shake itself out, it's time to take a look at the state of the market for 2011. With contracts either signed or on the verge of being signed, the picture of who will be riding where is becoming clear. For the most part, names have been at least pencilled in, those pencil strokes to be replaced by contractually obliging ink after Brno and Indianapolis, but there are still one or two question marks that remain open.
In the first part of this silly season summary, we will address who goes where in the factory teams. The rider picture is just about settled, with the only real question mark what happens at Suzuki. But riders aren't the only factor here, as somebody has to pay the bills. So alongside the rider lineup for each team, we've addressed the issue of sponsorship, and who is likely to be footing the bill next year. Riders and sponsors in bold are confirmed (or as good as confirmed), while names in italics are either best guesses or based on firm rumors. Tomorrow, we will look at the state of the satellite teams.

Biaggi To Extend Aprilia Deal Until 2012

A variety of Italian sources are reporting that WSBK championship points leader Max Biaggi will extend his stay at the factory Alitalia Aprilia team until 2012. A move to a rival team was never really considered a serious possibility, but the parties were said to be haggling over compensation. All that has been resolved, according to reports, with Biaggi agreeing to a salary of one million Euro per annum, which would probably make the Roman Emperor the highest paid rider in the series. All that remains is for Biaggi to sign on the dotted line. Aprilia is also reportedly keen to retain the services of the current BSB champion Leon Camier.

WSBK 2011 Rule Changes Include An End To Aprilia's Gear-Driven Cams

As is common at world championship motorcycle racing events, the Superbike commission - the World Superbike series' rule-making body - gathered to discuss rules to be introduced for the 2011 series. After the meeting, a press release was issued detailing the changes to be made for next season, and they make interesting reading.
The biggest change was the scrapping of the loophole which has allowed Aprilia to drive the camshafts on their RSV4 World Superbike machines using gears instead of the chains fitted on the production bikes. The rule had originally read "The method of cam drive (chain, belt or gears) must remain as on the homologated motorcycle unless a complete kit is available through normal commercial channels" but the last part of the sentence - "unless a complete kit is available through normal commercial channels" - has been dropped.

US MotoGP Shakeup: Back-To-Back Rounds Could See All Classes At Laguna And Indy

Ever since its return to America, MotoGP in the USA has been something of an anomaly. When the series first headed back across the Atlantic in 2005, it was only the MotoGP class that made the trip to Laguna Seca, with cost and limited paddock space cited as reasons for leaving the (then) 250 and 125 classes back in Europe. When the Red Bull US GP in Laguna was joined by the Red Bull Indianapolis GP at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway facility in 2008, the two support classes joined the MotoGP riders in the US, but only at Indy. Furthermore, the two US rounds have also always been separated by at least one European race, forcing the teams to fly their bikes and equipment out to the US twice.
