In another lean week top scorers, two names shot ahead from the pack to challenge the leaders - @tailzer and @harleymac1. 2011 WSBK Portimao Test Wednesday Session 1 Times: Rea Starts Out On Top

The World Superbike machines are back on track after a long winter lay-off, at the first day of the official WSBK test at Portimao. Fastest man on track on Wednesday morning was Castrol Honda's Johnny Rea, the Ulsterman taking an early lead and not relinquishing it. The margin of his lead was cut drastically: Rea had over a second and a half early in the session, but by the time the checkered flag fell, Liberty Ducati's Jakub Smrz had cut that back to under six hundredths of a second.
Reigning World Champion Max Biaggi was also back on form, setting the third fastest time of the session, a third of a second behind Rea, and over four tenths faster than lone Suzuki rider Michel Fabrizio. The Kawasaki made good on its off-season promise, Tom Sykes setting the 5th fastest time ahead of Rea's Castrol Honda teammate Ruben Xaus and Pata Aprilia's Nori Haga. Haga in turn was faster than the second factory Aprilia of Leon Camier, the young Briton ending over 1.1 seconds behind Rea.
The most disappointing of the debuts were for the Yamahas, with Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri finishing near or at the very bottom of the pile. Laverty was 1.8 seconds off Rea, while MotoGP refugee ended the day over two and a half seconds behind the Ulsterman, though in the Italian's defense, this is Melandri's first visit to the stunning Portuguese circuit.

Rossi's Verdict On Shoulder After Misano Test: Painful And Weak

Valentino Rossi took to the track today, to assess the state of his shoulder ahead of the resumption of official testing for the MotoGP class next week. Banned from testing a MotoGP bike, Rossi instead tested a WSBK-spec Ducati 1198SP, putting in a respectable 25 laps of the Italian circuit, just a few miles from his home, to judge his strength, mobility and fitness.
The verdict, according to a press release issued by Ducati Corse, is not good, but it is no worse than expected either. "It hurts a lot and isn't very strong," is how Rossi summed up the state of his shoulder after the test, though he added that the test "more or less confirmed what we expected." At Ducati's launch event in Italy, the Italian had told the press that he did not expect to be back at full fitness until May 1st, and this press release confirms those statements.

Another Ducati Launch: Karel Abraham And The 2011 Cardion AB Team

While the eyes of the world were on Madonna di Campiglio, the Italian ski resort which hosted Ducati's Wrooom! event, where Valentino Rossi was officially introduced as a Ducati rider, over in the Czech Republic, another Ducati rider was taking center stage. On Wednesday, the Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati held their official launch, presenting Karel Abraham as their rider for the 2011 season.
The team was launched with at least as much glitz and glamor as the Marlboro Ducati factory team, and with a huge amount of interest from the local Czech media. This is no doubt in part due to the fact that Karel Abraham's father, Karel senior, is an immensely wealthy businessman, owning the Cardion medical supplies firm, as well as the Brno circuit, but the excitement among Czech fans is genuine enough. Abraham is the first ever Czech rider to race in the MotoGP class, and coming off a surprising strong season in Moto2, including his first ever win at the last race of the 2010 season at Valencia.read more

Kenny Noyes Back In Moto2 For 2011

The announcement that the Jack&Jones team was pulling out of the Moto2 World Championship came as a something of a shock, for several reasons. Firstly, European fashion retailer Jack&Jones had been involved in motorcycle racing for several years; secondly, the withdrawal left both Kenny Noyes - Moto2's only American competitor, and a popular figure in Spain, where he is based - and Gabor Talmacsi - still a huge star in Hungary - out of a ride for 2011; but perhaps most surprising of all was the loss of face for Antonio Banderas, the Spanish / Hollywood actor who had backed the team.
The reason given was unsurprising; title sponsor Jack&Jones had pulled out of the project, leaving no money to run the team. Since the announcement, further stories have emerged that the team's finances were not in order throughout 2010: the team's press officer has issued a number of statements in which she claims that team manager Dani Devahive has failed to pay her, and the lack of development the riders complained of has been put down to an apparent financial dispute between Promoracing (the organization behind the team) and Harris, the UK-based chassis builders who supplied the frames for the team's Moto2 effort.

Still No Title Sponsor For Yamaha's MotoGP Team

The week of Ducati's MotoGP launch has seen a seemingly endless stream of press releases from the Italian factory announcing one sponsorship deal after another. In the past couple of weeks, there have been announcements from Italian clothing manufacturer Diesel, Taiwanese computer giant Acer, and an extension of their existing agreement with Shell. As predicted, the combined selling power of the Valentino Rossi and Ducati brands has proven irresistible to sponsors, and cash and material support is pouring into Ducati's MotoGP war chest.
The contrast with Yamaha is shocking, and rather worrying for the Japanese factory. While 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo continues to rack up personal deals (switching from Dainese to Alpinestars leathers, and a new deal with energy drink company Rockstar), the fairings of Yamaha's MotoGP team remain stubbornly blank. The withdrawal of Italian car giant Fiat came as no surprise, given Valentino Rossi's close personal contact with Lapo Elkann, a sire of the Agnelli clan that founded the Italian company, though the fact that Fiat did not make the switch along with Rossi did surprise many in the paddock.

After what seems like an eternal wait, Valentino Rossi is about to make his first official appearance as a Ducati rider on Monday evening, when the MotoGP team is presented at the annual Wrooom event that the Bologna factory host together with Ferrari at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio. Since Rossi's switch to Ducati was announced back in August 2010, Ducati, Rossi and Yamaha have masterminded a remarkable media blackout, meaning that nobody has been able to speak to the Italian about the move, despite the obvious fan demand and media pressure. Instead, the fans have been forced to make do with the impressions filtered through third parties, such as Filippo Preziosi at the Valencia tests, or more recently, Jerry Burgess in the Italian magazine Motosprint.

2011 MotoGP Testing Dates

Though Ducati's Wrooom! launch event at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio was eagerly anticipated by MotoGP fans and followers around the world, with the chance for Valentino Rossi to speak freely for the first time since his signing with Ducati had been announced, it merely served to whet appetites. What the fans really want to see is the bikes back on track, to see whether Rossi's disappointing times at Valencia were just a fluke, or were more indicative of problems adapting to the Ducati.
Fortunately, the fans do not have much longer to wait. The compulsory winter break, during which no official riders are allowed to test the MotoGP bikes, ends on January 31st, with testing resuming immediately afterwards. The riders take to the track in Malaysia on February 1st, for a three-day test, heading back three weeks later for another three days from the 22nd onwards. Another three weeks later, the riders assemble at Qatar for a two-day night test seven days before the season kicks off for real under the floodlights, in the middle of the desert.

Dorna Rejects Legal Action Against Suzuki - For Now

The relationship between MotoGP organizers Dorna and Suzuki has been very strained for the past few months. Rumors that Suzuki would pull out of MotoGP emerged over the summer of 2010, and after a meeting in Japan was postponed after the Motegi MotoGP round, Suzuki eventually announced they would be fielding just a single machine in 2011, with Alvaro Bautista riding it.
Since that announcement, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has made his unhappiness with Suzuki very clear, issuing veiled threats of legal action to force the Hamatsu factory to live up to the terms of their contract. Unfortunately - for Dorna at least - the terms of the contract do not appear to specify the minimum number of bikes that a factory must run in MotoGP, and Suzuki has seized upon this loophole to run just the one bike.

Ducati Confirms Major Changes To Desmosedici GP11

After Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden spoke to the press on Tuesday, Wednesday saw the turn of Ducati Corse boss Filippo Preziosi to talk to the press about the Desmosedici GP11 MotoGP bike, the influence that Rossi had had on the development direction, and the changes to be made. Summed up in a single word, those changes would best be described as radical: as reported yesterday, the new bike will have an altered forward subframe/airbox, modified triple clamps, revised swingarm and new 42mm forks, rather than the 48mm Ohlins used by all of the Ducatis (as well as the Yamahas and Hondas) except for Casey Stoner during 2010. The changes to the chassis are aimed at making the Desmosedici easier to turn, as well as providing improved feedback, and better feel for the rider, especially at extreme angles of lean.
More surprisingly, the engine has also undergone a major revision. The engine internals have been modified to provide a flatter torque curve, making for a bike that is easier to ride, with a less vicious power delivery. Ducati will be sticking with the Big Bang firing order, though Preziosi said they will retain the option to switch to the screamer at a later date. Electronics systems have also been altered, with Ducati working on anti-wheelie systems and on the traction control system.

MotoGP Schedule Shuffled Again: Three 45 Minute Sessions, And An Hour Qualifying

The announcement is the latest in a series of changes to the organization of practice, coming just over a month after the previous change. In the meeting of December 9th, 2010, the GP commission announced a return to the four-practice schedule, then agreeing that the MotoGP class would have four sessions of an hour, two sessions on Friday and two on Saturday, including qualifying in the afternoon. That has now been amended to three free practice sessions of 45 minutes (two on Friday and one on Saturday morning), with an hour of qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

Another Moto2 Withdrawal: Holiday Gym Team Withdraws, Simeon Jobless

Ever since its introduction, the Moto2 class has been oversubscribed, with more  teams wanting places than were available on the grid. Last year, over 40 riders regularly raced in the class, and there were 40 entries for the 2011 season.
Natural attrition is starting to take its toll on the Moto2 grid, however, After the announcement that the Jack&Jones By Antonio Banderas team had withdrawn - reportedly leaving a trail of unpaid bills behind them - another team has abandoned the series. The Holiday Gym team, which had entered Belgian rider Xavier Simeon for the 2011 Moto2 season aboard a Moriwaki, has decided to pull out of racing altogether.
This time, the problem was not one of money. Luis Guerra, owner of the Holiday Gym chain of fitness and spa centers, had set up the team to back his son Yannick's racing ambitions. After a spell in World Supersport, Guerra switched to Moto2, partnering Fonsi Nieto in the Holiday Gym G22 team run by Pablo and Gelete Nieto.

MotoMatters.com HQ is being relocated, from the Netherlands' oldest university town to a small town in the east of the country, close to the city at the heart of Operation Market Garden. As a consequence, MotoMatters.com staff - or more specifically, your humble correspondent - is spending an inordinate amount of time on matters such as removing old wallpaper, packing up a couple of years' worth of MotoGP memorabilia, and sorting through those piles of papers that have been sitting there doing nothing for the past thirteen years we have been in the house.

WSBK Increases TV Viewers by 33% in 2010

WSBK’s worldwide television audience grew by 33% from the 2009 to 2010 season. According to Infront, the “championship reached a cumulative audience of 498 million” for the 2010 season, meaning each WSBK race garnered around 40 million viewers. While still a considerably smaller number than MotoGP, which claims around 300 million viewers for each race, this is the sort of jump in audience that makes sponsorship dollars appear more easily. The official WSBK website had ...Read More Click Here Alonso Find Out Schumacher

WSBK Schedule Reshuffled, Superpole Revised, More Technical Changes Coming

With some sense of sanity returning to motorcycle racing paddocks around the world, many of the emergency cost-cutting measures put in place in late 2008 and early 2009 are being reversed. One of the most prominent was the rearranging of the schedules on a race weekend, with practice in MotoGP being cut from four sessions to three, and in World Superbike, having all of the action removed from Friday morning. The WSBK schedule had taken on a rather strange appearance as a result, with two sessions of practice for both the World Superbike and the World Supersport classes jammed into Friday afternoon.
The Superbike Commission - WSBK's rule-making body - has come to its senses once again, and after bitter complaints from the teams - especially the World Supersport teams, who had their first qualifying practice at 5pm on Friday, often in very cold conditions - the change has been reversed. Practice once again returns to Friday morning, bringing qualifying much closer to race time for both World Superbike and World Supersport.

Engineers Assemble In Bologna To Work On 2011 Ducati MotoGP Bike

If anyone thought that the media storm surrounding Valentino Rossi's switch to Ducati for the 2011 MotoGP season would die down once the announcement had been made official, they were to be proven utterly wrong. First, there was the saga of whether Yamaha would release Rossi early from his contract to allow the Italian to test the Ducati at Valencia, then there was the excitement and drama of the Valencia test itself.
Rossi ended the Valencia test 15th fastest, with only MotoGP returnee Toni Elias and MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham behind him, unleashing a tidal wave of speculation surrounding his test result. Rossi's slow time was put down to his still injured shoulder (for which he had surgery a few days later), and in wanting to get acquainted with the Ducati Desmosedici, rather than focus on trying to put in a fast lap.
While both these explanations are undoubtedly true, there were also a few of signs of panic among the Ducati team, despite team manager Alessandro Cicognani professing that Ducati was "not worried" about the times. Speaking to the press after the test, Ducati Corse director Filippo Preziosi described the test as a "bad test" and spoke of Rossi's lack of feeling with the front end. But the Ducati team had taken plenty of positives from the test, with Rossi expressing himself to be impressed with the engine and the rear grip, something he had complained about on the Yamaha just about all year.

HRC Update On Pedrosa's Shoulder Injury: Recovery Going Well, About To Resume Training

With the holiday season almost upon us, teams are clearing their desks before heading off for their Christmas and New Year's break. That explains the blizzard of press releases being issued. The latest HRC missive concerns Dani Pedrosa's condition, and his progress during his recovery. The Spaniard broke his collarbone in Motegi in early October, after the throttle on his RC212V stuck open, causing him to crash heavily. Repsol Honda Team rider Dani Pedrosa is now in the final stages of recovery from the shoulder injury he sustained last October and is excited to return to training in early January.

KTM Building Moto3 Machine

When the rules for the Moto3 class, due to replace the 125cc two-stroke class from 2012 onwards, were announced, the entry of existing motocross and supermoto manufacturers seemed only a question of time. The new class is to feature 250cc, single cylinder four-stroke engines, with a maximum bore of 81mm and rev limited to 14,000 rpm, and all of the current companies building motocross bikes have an engine which - with a little modification - would fit that bill.
The biggest - by reputation, at least - of the MX bike builders is surely KTM, and when Moto3 was announced, the gaze of the press immediately turned on Mattighofen, KTM's Austrian base. Rumors emerged as early as October that KTM was considering an entry, and now GPOne.com is reporting that the decision has been made, and that KTM's Moto3 project is already underway. According to GPOne.com, the technical details of the Moto3 engine are yet to be finalized, but given that the rules were only published in full at Valencia, with the details of the spec ECU issued just a couple of days ago, it is hardly surprising that KTM wanted to wait before starting work.

Laverty Fastest On Final Day Of Phillip Island WSBK Test

The rain that had been hanging over the World Superbike test for the first two days finally came on the third and final day. But the factory Yamaha and Aprilia squads were still lucky, with the rain only starting to fall late on Thursday morning at Phillip Island, before disappearing again in the afternoon, giving the riders a couple more dry sessions at the Australian circuitl. It was Eugene Laverty who made best use of the session, putting on a set of soft tires to set the fastest time, with a lap of 1'31.5. The Yamaha rider finished ahead of Max Biaggi, once again the fastest of the two factory Aprilia riders, while Laverty's teammate Marco Melandri matched the pace of Aprilia's Leon Camier,
The rain did not go to waste, however. Marco Melandri took the opportunity to get some time on the Pirelli rain tires, having no experience on the Italian rubber, after having spent his career in the Grand Prix paddock racing Dunlops, Michelins and Bridgestones. His teammate Laverty was the only rider to test the softer tires, the two Aprilia riders using the harder race tires.
