Settling An Argument: Casey Stoner Talks Electronics And Sliding The Front At Phillip Island

If there is one rider who somehow manages to generate debate among MotoGP fans, it is Casey Stoner, almost all of it completely undeserved. After the Phillip Island round, controversy raged again across internet forums about Stoner's dominant victory at his home Grand Prix, centering on two subjects: Whether Stoner had switched the electronics off entirely for the Phillip Island race, and whether or not Stoner was sliding both front and rear round the track, or just the rear.
To settle the argument, we went straight to the horse's mouth, and cornered Casey after the pre-event press conference at Estoril. Here's what the Marlboro Ducati rider had to say about the race at Australia:
MotoMatters.com: There's a lot of talk going around that you switch the electronics off at Philip Island. You always use less electronics than most of the other riders, so can you explain exactly what did happen?

2010 Estoril MotoGP FP2 Result - Lorenzo Leads Under A Clearing Sky

With skies clearing and the weather surprising everyone by improving radically, the MotoGP riders finally got a chance to put in some serious laps at Estoril in the second session of free practice. The session started out in a light rain and on a sodden track, and Casey Stoner sped to the top of the timesheets, firmly in control for much of practice. But as the sun came out and something approaching a dry line appeared, others started to make inroads on Stoner's position.
At the end of practice, it was Fiat Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo who set the quickest time, ending FP2 just over a tenth ahead of Stoner's Marlboro Ducati teammate Nicky Hayden. Hayden split the Fiat Yamaha teammates, Valentino Rossi over a third of a second behind Lorenzo in 3rd, while Rossi was himself the filling in a Marlboro Ducati sandwich, with Casey Stoner ending up 4th.
Behind the front four loomed a large gap, with Ben Spies nearly two thirds of a second behind on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha, while San Carlo Gresini's Marco Melandri had an outstanding afternoon, ending up 6th, just behind Spies.

Honda Silly Season Update: Three Repsols And Elias At LCR

MotoGP's silly season is almost at an end, with only a few loose ends left to tie up. The names of the riders are all known now, though contracts remain to be signed and announcements to be made, as the final details of deals are hammered out among the various parties.
While Honda's factory line up has been known for a couple of months now, the exact line up and organization has remained unclear. HRC had three riders under contract to ride in the factory team, with Casey Stoner joining Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa for 2011, but there was some doubt about the way the trio would be organized. At Aragon, HRC Marketing Director Livio Suppo told MotoMatters.com that there would be four factory Honda riders for 2011: Stoner, Dovizioso, Pedrosa and Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli, who also has a contract with HRC directly. After talks failed to tempt another sponsor in to run Casey Stoner in a separate team, Honda put pressure on Andrea Dovizioso to take a seat in the San Carlo Gresini Honda team alongside Simoncelli, with the promise of full factory support in the Gresini squad.

Inmotec To Test MotoGP Bike At Valencia, On Grid For 2011?

The perilous state of the MotoGP grid has long been a topic of conversation among MotoGP fans. The grid threatened to drop to just 15 bikes earlier this year, but intervention from Dorna allowed Pramac to keep running two machines instead of dropping to one, and a sponsorship boost from Repsol helped Honda field three riders in its factory team, freeing up space at Gresini for Hiroshi Aoyama.
That still leaves the grid at just 17 bikes, however: six Hondas (three Repsols, two Gresinis and one LCR), six Ducatis (two Marlboro factory bikes, two Pramac bikes, one Aspar bike and one Cardion bike for Karel Abraham), four Yamahas (the factory squad and Tech 3) and a solitary Suzuki, Rizla having pulled out and the factory unwilling to run two machines. This is a long way from Dorna's ideal grid size of 24 bikes, but as long as the manufacturers control the technical rules, there is little hope that this might change any time soon.

Estoril Update: Checa Confirmed At Pramac, Capirossi To Attempt To Ride

The fears that the MotoGP grid would once again be short of full strength at Estoril have been allayed, at least for the time being, with the news that Loris Capirossi is to attempt to race in Portugal, despite the pain from his fractured foot. The veteran Italian is far from healthy, with a torn adductor muscle in his leg and multiple fractures in his right foot, but Capirossi heads to Estoril hoping that he will be able to race despite his injuries. In a statement in the Rizla Suzuki press release, Capirossi said that the fractured cuboid and metatarsal in his foot should not be an issue, as he had ridden with the injured foot at Phillip Island. The bigger question mark is over the Italian's thigh muscle, which ruled him out of the race in Australia.

Testing Update: Crutchlow Tries M1, Sofuoglu To Test Suter At Albacete

Preparations for next year are starting to get into gear, with testing for 2011 already underway. After wrapping up his World Superbike season, Cal Crutchlow got his first outing on Yamaha's MotoGP bike at the Fukuroi test track in Japan, as he got ready to move into the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha squad for 2011. The elements did not look kindly on Crutchlow, however, most of the test taking place in the wet, though the young Briton also got a few laps in under relatively dry conditions. Crutchlow will be hoping for better conditions at Valencia, for the first official outing on the Yamaha M1. He will not be alone, as the Valencia post-race test will also see Valentino Rossi's first outing on the Ducati and Casey Stoner's first test on the Honda.
2010 World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu is also preparing for his move to Moto2 next year, by testing the Technomag Suter machine at Albacete in Spain on Monday. The Turkish rider will be competing in the last two races of the year, at Estoril and Valencia, before making a full-time switch for next season. Sofuoglu is believed to be close to a permanent deal with the Technomag squad for 2011, though several other teams have also shown an interest in the Turk.

KTM To Build Moto3 Engine?

When the 125cc class is replaced by the 250cc Moto3 class in 2012, the last of the two strokes will disappear from the Grand Prix paddock. The demise of the 125cc two-strokes was largely down to lack of manufacturer interest: KTM had pulled out at the end of the 2009 season, Honda has not supported a factory effort for several years now, leaving only Aprilia on the grid, along with the Derbi-badged clones. In the hope of reducing costs and attracting more manufacturers to the class, the decision was made to switch to 250cc four-stroke singles, with a cap on the price the engines are to be sold for.
So far, the change has aroused the interest of the Japanese manufacturers, with Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki all rumored to be building a Moto3 engine, and now, Austrian manufacturer KTM could be interested in making a return to the smallest Grand Prix class, with Belgian MX magazine MotocrossMag reporting that KTM is looking at producing a specially tuned version of its SX-F 250 engine for use in Moto3. In its current form, as used for motocross racing, the engine produces in the region of 40hp, and with the addition of several specially lightened parts, the engine could be made to rev higher and produce more power, while still staying under the 10,000 euro maximum selling price.

Last Of The Holdouts: Biaggi To Sign New Two-Year Deal

The World Superbike rider carousel kicked into high gear around the final WSBK round at Magny-Cours, but there was one notable name absent from the flurry of contract signings. Despite having wrapped up the 2010 World Superbike title the weekend before, Max Biaggi kept remarkably silent on his future plans, leading to speculation that the Roman Emperor might even be considering retirement.
Biaggi himself dismissed talk of retirement, though he refused to comment on what his intentions might be. With every factory seat but one taken in WSBK, though, there was little debate about where he would end up: Back at Aprilia, with the factory that had brought him his first WSBK title, and his first championship in 13 years. The question was surely just a matter of when the new contract would be announced.

2010 Phillip Island MotoGP FP1 Result - Lorenzo Takes Charge In The Wet

After a delay of two hours due to horrific weather and a dirty track at Phillip Island, the first session of free practice got underway on a cold, wet and windy circuit, though the circuit started to dry out as the session progressed. Jorge Lorenzo was the fastest man in the miserable conditions, getting his return to the track after wrapping up the 2010 world title off to a strong start. The Fiat Yamaha man was a third of a second quicker than local boy and the winner of the last races here, Casey Stoner, who in turn was just over a tenth quicker than his Marlboro Ducati teammate Nicky Hayden.
A gaggle of Hondas finished from 4th to 6th, with the San Carlo Gresini bikes of Marco Simoncelli and Marco Melandri ending ahead of the Repsol machine of Andrea Dovizioso, Dovizioso the first rider to be over a second behind Lorenzo. A pair of Yamahas followed the Hondas, Valentino Rossi setting the 7th fastest time, nearly a second and a half behind his Fiat Yamaha teammate, while Colin Edwards was the best part of two seconds slower than Lorenzo on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha.

Fabrizio Officially Confirmed At Alstare Suzuki

With the 2010 WSBK season at an end, more and more pieces are falling into place for 2011. With the factory Xerox Ducati team being disbanded, the question of where Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga would end up was at the front of many people's minds. Haga has since moved to the privateer DFX Borciani Aprilia, leaving only Fabrizio officially unsigned.
An announcement yesterday by the Alstare Suzuki team ended that situation. Alstare announced what most people had suspected, that Michel Fabrizio would be joining the team for 2011. The signing was barely news, given that the Italian had tested the Suzuki at the post-race tests at Magny-Cours, but the deal was only made official yesterday.
Fabrizio will be the team's only rider, as Alstare is scaling back its involvement in line with a reduction in factory support. That reduction already saw the team lose Leon Haslam to BMW, but with Fabrizio back with the team - the Italian won the 2003 Superstock championship with Alstare - they at least have a good shot at being competitive. The press release appears below:

Fabrizio Returns To Alstare Suzuki Team For 2011 Superbike World Championship

Carlos Checa To Replace Kallio At Pramac For Estoril And Valencia

After a promising rookie year in MotoGP, Mika Kallio has struggled in 2010 on the Pramac Ducati. So mediocre has his form been the past six month, that Kallio has decided to call it quits early. According to reports in the Spanish media, Kallio will not be riding the last two races of the season for the Pramac Ducati squad, and his season will end after Sunday's race at Phillip Island.
Taking his place will be yet another Spaniard: After an outstanding year in the World Superbike championship aboard a Ducati 1198R, finishing 3rd behind Max Biaggi and Leon Haslam, and well ahead of the factory Xerox Ducatis of Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio, the 38-year-old veteran Carlos Checa is to replace Kallio at Estoril and Valencia. Checa last rode in MotoGP back in 2007, when he raced for the LCR Honda squad currently fielding Randy de Puniet, after which the Spaniard moved to World Superbikes.

Rossi?s opinion of the Lorenzo negotiations

This quote comes from the Spanish language website elmundodeportivo.es. The message and the sentiment are clear: “You aren’t worth what I get paid Jorge”.

Pedrosa To Return At Phillip Island

The fractured collarbone Dani Pedrosa sustained at Motegi could not have come at a worse time for the Repsol Honda rider. Pedrosa and his team had finally sorted the Honda RC212V, and with Pedrosa on blistering form, were starting to reel in Jorge Lorenzo. Actually snatching the championship from the Fiat Yamaha rider looked to be almost impossible, but they were going to make it as tough as possible for Lorenzo all the way to the end. The crash also came at the first of three flyaway races on three consecutive weekends, giving Pedrosa virtually no time to recover from the triple fracture. Complicating things further was the distance Pedrosa would have to travel to seek medical assistance, flying from Japan back to Barcelona for surgery, and then back out to Malaysia or Australia for his next race.
In the end, Pedrosa decided to skip the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, but the Repsol Honda team have just announced that Pedrosa will be back at Phillip Island. The Spaniard was due to fly out to Australia on Monday, giving him as much time to recover and prepare for the race as possible. Pedrosa's fractured collarbone is healing well, the titanium plate holding the fragments together doing its job perfectly. But the Repsol Honda man is still suffering with stiffness in his neck and shoulder, and will be receiving physiotherapy in Australia to help deal with the problem. Pedrosa's objective is to hold on to his 2nd place in the MotoGP Championship, where he leads Valentino Rossi by 47 points. With just three races to go, that should be an achievable goal, though Pedrosa will have to score points consistently to ensure his place in the standings is safe.

Official Jorge Lorenzo Profile: 2010 MotoGP World Champion

Official MotoGP.com profile of Jorge Lorenzo:

Jorge Lorenzo - 2010 MotoGP World Champion
Jorge Lorenzo’s route to MotoGP glory has been paved with record-breaking achievements, and first began with an encounter with minicross competitions aged just three. Lorenzo competed in this format in addition to trial, minimoto and junior motocross in his native Mallorca over the next few years, then followed up a 50cc Copa Aprilia title by entering the Spanish Championship with special permission, aged just thirteen.
Setting a record unlikely to ever be broken, Lorenzo subsequently became the youngest ever rider to enter a World Championship race. Turning fifteen – the minimum age for Grand Prix participation back then - on the second day of practice for the 2002 Spanish race at Jerez, he made his debut onboard a Derbi 125cc at a track where he would enjoy much success over the next few years.
In just his second season he took his first Grand Prix victory at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where his impressive “round the outside” overtaking manoeuvre on Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa won him the nickname “Por Fuera”. In 2004 he sealed a further three triumphs, before making the move up to the 250cc category a year later and taking four poles and six podiums in his maiden season.

Official Toni Elias Profile: 2010 Moto2 World Champion

Official MotoGP.com profile of Toni Elias:

Toni Elías - 2010 Moto2 World Champion
Growing up in the family bike shop in Manresa as the son of a ten-times Spanish motocross champion, Toni Elias was destined for a career on two wheels. His early forays into the sport came in pocket-bike and scooter racing, before he began his pro career in the Spanish 125cc Championship in 1998. After finishing third in the national series the following year he won a ride on a Honda for his first full Grand Prix season in 2000.
It was in 2001, however, when the teenager became the revelation of the year after signing up to ride with the junior project run by Alberto Puig, battling for the lower cylinder category title until the end of the season. He won two races and finished an impressive third, up to this year his equal-best championship finish.

MotoGP Grid Down To 15: Pramac To Run Just One Bike For 2011

The dwindling of the MotoGP grid has accelerated to a full-scale hemorrhage. Earlier in the week, it emerged that Hiroshi Aoyama's Interwetten Honda team is on the verge of pulling out for 2011, and yesterday, news leaked from Suzuki suggests that the factory Suzuki team will cut its involvement to just a single bike for next season. With two bikes gone from the already sparse MotoGP grid, only the addition of Karel Abraham and the Cardion AB team have saved MotoGP's modesty, bringing the probable line up for next year to 16.
Today, things got even worse for MotoGP, however, with news emerging from the Pramac Ducati camp that the team is to halve their rider lineup next year, down from the two-man effort of Mika Kallio and Aleix Espargaro to just a single rider, either Loris Capirossi or Aleix Espargaro. Capirossi - whose seat left vacant at Suzuki will not be filled, it seems - and his manager Carlo Pernat are insistent that they have a contract with Pramac for next season, and there is no doubt that team manager - and CEO of the Pramac concern - Paolo Campinoti is very keen to have Capirossi in the satellite Ducati squad. Aleix Espargaro, however, still has a contract with Pramac to ride for next year, though the Spanish rookie seems content to accept that he will be out of MotoGP next season, and is already talking to both Aspar and Pons in Moto2 for 2011.

Pedrosa Certain To Miss Sepang MotoGP Round

Any chance that Dani Pedrosa had of snatching the 2010 MotoGP championship from the grasp of Jorge Lorenzo disappeared on Friday at Motegi, when the Repsol Honda rider suffered a nasty crash which fractured his collarbone. Pedrosa flew straight back to Spain to have the collarbone plated, in the hope of making a speedy return to racing. Realistically, though, his hopes were gone, for Pedrosa would have to win the remaining four MotoGP rounds, while Jorge Lorenzo would have to score next to no points in the rest of the races for Pedrosa to become champion. Beating Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner is hard enough when Pedrosa is fit, let alone a week after breaking his collarbone in three places.
In a press release issued today by the Repsol Honda team, Pedrosa explained that his recovery was progressing well, but he implicitly conceded that his chances of the title were gone. Though he did not rule out a return at Malaysia, both the team and Pedrosa judged the chances of that happening as being "very small". Pedrosa is suffering from a lot of stiffness in his neck and his shoulders, and is still incapable of moving his arm under his own strength. He is undergoing physiotherapy to help fix the problem, but it requires time for his shoulder to be strong enough to race again.
