Yamaha Hope To Announce 2011 Line-Up At Brno

Despite the two-week layoff after Laguna Seca, MotoGP's summer break sees Silly Season in overdrive. As the paddock awaits the final announcement of Valentino Rossi's move to Ducati, expected at Brno, the reshuffling which must necessarily take place to fill the seat left by the Italian is going on behind the scenes.
The rider expected to fill Rossi's seat is of course Ben Spies, as his current boss, Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Herve Poncharal hinted in an interview at Laguna Seca. But until Rossi officially announces his switch to Ducati, and therefore rejects Yamaha's bid to keep his services, nothing can be finalized. That is set to change at Brno, however. According to Yamaha Racing's managing director Lin Jarvis, speaking to the Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Yamaha wants to have their 2011 line-up sorted out by Brno. Yamaha is closing in on a deal with the man currently leading the MotoGP championship Jorge Lorenzo, and should be able to settle the final details within the next two weeks. "We'd like to have everything in place by Brno, in order to announce the 2011 team," Jarvis told the Gazzetta.

Nicky And Roger Lee Hayden Teleconference:

Over the course of the year, the press relations people at two of the venues hosting international motorcycle racing in the US - Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Miller Motorsports Park - have hosted some fascinating teleconferences with the stars of the MotoGP and World Superbike series. Yesterday, it was the turn of Indy, and in the capable hands of IMS' communications manager Paul Kelly, the press got a chance to talk to the youngest two of the Hayden brothers, Nicky and Roger Lee. Obviously, much of the talk was about their recent experiences at the Red Bull US GP at Laguna Seca, but Nicky and Roger also got a chance to talk about a few other subjects as well: Rog talked about his upcoming Moto2 ride at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on August 28th, while Nicky talked about the strength of racing in Owensboro, Kentucky, and how important Indy is as a home race. Here's the transcript:

Andrea Dovizioso Saturday Debrief: Still Speaking With Honda

Q: You had a very good day at qualifying today, how do you feel going into the race tomorrow?
Andrea Dovizioso: I'm really, really happy about the 3rd position. It's so important to start at the front tomorrow. We have a really good pace, but sure, Lorenzo and Casey have a little bit better pace. So we need to improve, this pace is not enough to fight really for the victory. But we are really close, and I'm really confident. The race will be long and we made a good job during practice, because we have improved during the weekend.
Q: Each race we see you improve gradually more and more, becoming a star rider, when will we see you as the top rider in the team?
AD: Ah, we are close, I think! So we made a big, big improvement from last year, so big. I think still we have the possibility to improve a lot. Now, our limit is this, but during the race we improve always, so I think we can be stronger from here to the end of the season.
Q: Laguna Seca is the mid-point of the season, what are your goals and priorities from now until the end of the season?

Hayden Pleased With Asymmetric Tires At Laguna Seca

Casey Stoner's calls for a softer tire from Bridgestone caused some discussion in the paddock about the merits of the control tire in the sport. Stoner's argument is that the Bridgestones being supplied are too hard, and this is occasionally causing the tires to drop out of their operating temperature in cold conditions, during morning practice and warmup, for example. The evidence - such as it is - would seem to bear this out, with crashes by Valentino Rossi, Hiroshi Aoyama, Ben Spies and others during morning sessions all being put down to cooling tires.

2010 Laguna Seca MotoGP FP1 Result: Stoner Already Pushing Lap Record

Casey Stoner topped the timesheets after the first day of practice at the Red Bull US GP, the Marlboro Ducati rider getting within a couple of tenths of the lap record after just a single session. Stoner's first run seemed a lot less promising, the Australian heading back into the pits where his second bike had its setup radically revised, before taking to the track once again to lay down his usual scorching pace. Jorge Lorenzo was the only man to get near for most of practice, the Fiat Yamaha rider leading the first half of the session before being eclipsed by Stoner in the second half.
Towards the end of the session, Stoner and Lorenzo were joined by the two Repsol Hondas, Andrea Dovizioso coming out comfortably ahead of teammate Dani Pedrosa, the Italian running extremely well at Laguna. In 5th place, Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Ben Spies showed what a difference track knowledge makes, working on setup on Friday instead of learning his way around a new circuit, and getting within spitting distance of Pedrosa. Spies also finished ahead of the Fiat Yamaha of Valentino Rossi, the Italian suffering no so much with his pinned leg, but more with his shoulder as he muscled his way down the Corkscrew.

Valentino Rossi: "I Want To Race In Superbikes!"

Valentino Rossi's future has been dominating the news now for weeks, if not months, with all the talk being of Rossi's impending switch to Ducati. But lost in all this talk of next year is Valentino Rossi's longer term future, and what he will do when he retires from MotoGP. It has widely been assumed by both media and fans that Rossi will make the transition to four wheels after racing on two, with Ferrari making no secret of their wish to retain the Italian, even going so far as to hint at the possibility of running a third car in Formula One for the Italian legend. If Rossi decided against Formula One, there was always the World Rally Championship, as rallying is Rossi's other great passion.
But recent indications are that retiring from MotoGP may not see the end of Valentino Rossi's life on two wheels. In an interview with Italian veteran journalist Paolo Scalera in the sports daily Corriere dello Sport, Rossi was asked to imagine it was 25 years from now, and he is looking back at his career, and in his imaginary future career, Rossi talked about rejecting F1 in favor of going racing in World Superbikes. His reasoning was simple and clear: "Bikes are for racing, cars are for fun," Rossi told the Corriere dello Sport, adding weight to the possibility ofa future switch to the rival series once he has completed his objective of beating Giacomo Agostini's records in MotoGP.

Some Are More Equal Than Others: Suzuki To Get Extra MotoGP Engines

Jorge Lorenzo's huge engine blow-up during qualifying at the Sachsenring showed the extent to which manufacturers are finding the limits with engine life, but Yamaha's problems are nothing compared to Suzuki's. The Rizla Suzuki riders are heading rapidly towards the end of their allocation of six engines to last the season, with Alvaro Bautista already having taken his 5th engine so far, while Loris Capirossi is nearing that moment very quickly. After just 8 of the 18 races, it is clear that there is no way that Suzuki is going to make it through to the end of the season without taking a penalty.
According to Motorcycle News' Matt Birt, the pressure on Suzuki is about to be eased. MCN is reporting that the manufacturers have agreed to give Suzuki an extra three engines per rider, to ensure they make it to the end of the year without incurring a penalty. To take such a penalty once - starting from pit lane 10 seconds after the rest of the field have started - might have been overlooked, but Suzuki was on schedule to have one of their riders starting from pit lane almost every race from Indianapolis onwards. With an allocation of nine engines instead of six, MotoGP's smallest and least well-funded factory has a chance to make it to Valencia without being forced to use engines outside of the imposed limits.

Hayden Puts Stoner Comments Down To "Mistranslation"

Comments apparently made by Nicky Hayden in an interview with the Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport caused a bit of a stir among MotoGP fans. According to Autosport, Hayden told the Gazzetta that it was "a bit shameful" for Casey Stoner to leave Ducati. In response to questions about Stoner's move to Honda, Hayden allegedly replied "I think it's a bit shameful, as Ducati has done a lot for his career and has helped him in every possible way in winning races and the championship."
When asked about the comments at Laguna Seca, Hayden denied that was what he said, suggesting the problem probably arose from a misunderstanding. "Maybe it was just a translation," Hayden said, but he made it clear he was aware that words can get twisted to suit the ends of the media. "Maybe the journalist is looking to sell a few more magazines, because I mean, [Casey] knows me, I wouldn't make a comment like that, that's not my business," Hayden explained. "You know I would like to say something got lost in translation, but I think they're just trying to make a headline."

How Lorenzo's Engine Blow Up Could Affect The Championship

In the middle of qualifying practice at the Sachsenring today, we witnessed a spectacle that had not been seen at a MotoGP race for a very long time - since 2007, in fact, and ironically, in almost exactly the same location. As Jorge Lorenzo pinned the throttle on his YZR M1 up the hill onto the front straight, the engine let go in a very major way, spewing smoke, flames, oil and coolant out of the back of the bike and all over the track, right into the braking area. The Fiat Yamaha rider quickly pointed his bike to the side of the track, but unfortunately, not before Ben Spies and Randy de Puniet had crashed on the oil, De Puniet banging his leg nastily on Spies' Monster Tech 3 Yamaha machine.
While most of the attention was on De Puniet's injury, and the spectacular images Lorenzo's Yamaha had produced, belching smoke and flame like some kind of mythical fire serpent, thoughts in the paddock turned to the state of Lorenzo's engines. For this is the second engine that Lorenzo has lost: the Spaniard previous lost an engine during practice at Assen, that machine merely producing a few puffs of smoke, rather than belching great gouts of smoke and oil like the bike in Germany did. With less than eight of the sixteen races gone, Lorenzo has now lost two of the six engines that each rider has to last the season.read more

2010 Sachsenring MotoGP FP2 Result - Lorenzo Refinds Form On Drying Track

After a mediocre start at the Sachsenring, Jorge Lorenzo rediscovered his form this morning, setting the fastest time of the morning's FP2 session at the Sachsenring at the very end of practice. The Fiat Yamaha rider had dominated for much of the session, with Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner his only real challenger. Stoner ended the session in 2nd, over a tenth behind.
Valentino Rossi's miraculous recovery continues apace, the Fiat Yamaha rider ending the morning session in 3rd, four tenths behind his teammate, but ahead of yesterday's fastest man, Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa. Pedrosa sneaked ahead of LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet, the Frenchman continuing to impress on the satellite Honda, finishing ahead of the second factory bike of Andrea Dovizioso.

Confirmed: Roger Lee Hayden In For De Puniet, Espargaro Heading To US

The search for a replacement MotoGP rider, which seemed so difficult for Valentino Rossi and Hiroshi Aoyama, has not been so complicated for Randy de Puniet's replacement, it seems. Last night, we reported on rumors that Roger Lee Hayden was to replace the Frenchman on the LCR Honda at Laguna Seca, and this morning, it appears that the news has been confirmed. The extremely well-connected Italian site GPOne.com is reporting that the the youngest of the three Hayden brothers has been confirmed as De Puniet's replacement for the Red Bull US GP in Monterey.
Hayden was an obvious choice to replace De Puniet at Laguna, as he had several key factors working in his favor. Firstly, he has experience on a MotoGP bike, although that experience is from 2007, when he rode a wildcard Kawasaki at Laguna, finishing 10th on his first time on the bike. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Roger Lee knows Laguna Seca like the back of his hand, having ridden it in the AMA for so many years. This is a crucial factor in selecting the American, as any former 250 or current Moto2 riders drafted in are unlikely ever to have seen the track, as the junior classes have never accompanied MotoGP to California since the series returned there in 2005, for reasons of cost.

Rossi To Test At Brno On Monday, To Announce Future Afterwards?

Valentino Rossi's return to racing looks increasingly likely to take place sooner rather than later. After testing a Yamaha R1 at Misano last Wednesday, the Italian is now scheduled to test James Toseland's World Superbike R1 at Brno on Monday afternoon. Rossi is due to fly in to Brno tomorrow, and prepare for the test in the afternoon.
The test will be interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, of course, it will be a measure of Rossi's fitness, who now seems to be pushing hard to return to racing at the Sachsenring next weekend, rather than Brno a month later. Rossi's return is being eagerly awaited by everyone in the MotoGP paddock - and especially by Dorna, who are struggling with falling TV ratings. Rossi will also be using Pirelli tires, rather than the Bridgestones he used at Misano, making a direct comparison between Rossi's times and those of the World Superbike riders much easier, though Rossi is still carrying an injury to his shoulder and is recovering from a broken tibia.

Rossi: "Announcement On Future Only After Brno"

The rumors that Valentino Rossi is about to forsake Yamaha and go to Ducati have been growing ever since Mugello. But over the past few weeks, those rumors have been growing ever more frantic, with official announcements of the deal being predicted at Barcelona, at Brno after the test, and here at the Sachsenring. The latest rumors gathering pace in the Italian press is that a deal is to be announced at Laguna Seca, after the race there next weekend.
That is not to be the case, according to Rossi himself. When asked during the pre-event press conference when the media and Rossi's fans could expect an announcement on his future, Rossi said that the time was not yet ripe. "I think now for me, it's too early," the Fiat Yamaha rider told the press conference. Any news would come much later in the year, he said: "I think it's possible to say what's happening for me in 2011 after the Brno race."
